| Award for Excellence in Nursing Education - Non-Tenure | | | Award for Excellence in Nursing Education - Non-Tenure 2009 Elizabeth “Betty” Burcher is an excellent candidate to receive the Excellence in Nursing Education Award (non-tenured) posthumously. A celebrated public health nurse, Betty worked for many years for the Department of Public Health, City of Toronto, attaining senior positions including manager of the Teaching Health Unit, of Health Information and Research, and of Health Planning. In 2002, the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto had the good fortune of hiring Betty as a lecturer.Betty mentored countless students and was known for providing wise academic guidance and career council to anyone who sought her out. A passionate believer in diversity within the profession, students from underrepresented groups within the profession, as well as older students and those making new lives for themselves in Canada, had a special place in her heart. She kept in close contact with many of these students over the years and saw them not only through their undergraduate years but often well past their first jobs and into graduate programs. While she was perhaps best known for her leadership in courses in public health and community nursing, as well as health policy and professional issues, she was deeply involved in many innovative aspects of the curriculum including the development of new strategies to promote student learning, including her recent contributions to interprofessional education and emergency preparedness. She earned numerous Faculty teaching awards for this exceptional work. | | |
