CASN/CART Project Launch: Advancing access to abortion for under-served populations through tools for healthcare professionals and people seeking care
The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) is pleased to announce that the project titled “Advancing access to abortion for under-served populations through tools for healthcare professionals and people seeking care” has been launched. This project is a component of the University of British Columbia initiative “The Contraception and Abortion Research Team (CART) Access Project: Advancing access to abortion for under-served populations through tools for healthcare professionals and people seeking care” which has been funded by Health Canada.
CASN is committed to the advancement of access to abortion for under-served populations through educational tools for healthcare, nursing, nursing education professionals, and people seeking care. CASN has been a longstanding supporter of the advancement of nursing knowledge in areas of public health such as contraception and abortion research.
Although there have been regulatory changes to help increase access to abortion care in Canada, many barriers remain. Health Canada approved medical abortions in 2017 and added Nurse Practitioners to the list of prescribers. There are around 100,000 abortions in Canada annually, yet education related to abortion care is limited among health care provider training. To promote and support schools of nursing in Canada to include abortion care in their courses related to reproductive and public health, guidelines for nursing education are needed.
