Description:

In early 2021, the Community Health Nurse Educators Interest group of CASN, made up of over 30 community health educators across the country, engaged in discussions concerning the erosion of community health nursing (CHN) and population health content and practice placements in Canadian undergraduate nursing programs. Intent with collecting evidence related to this observation, we surveyed nurse educators across the country. We discovered that our shared concerns were valid and that while the erosion commenced ahead of the pandemic, a disturbing trend emerged during the pandemic with population health placements being switched to acute care placements and replaced with simulation learning experiences. While we understood that this was, in part, due to the difficulty in securing placements, this trend has continued in many nursing programs across Canada. In this webinar, interest group members will discuss key findings from the research study and share a companion document developed to accompany the CASN National Education Framework. The companion document aims to provide examples and detailed learning outcomes specific to community health nursing that educators can use to strengthen curriculum and learning opportunities relating to community health nursing. Additionally in the webinar we will share tools and strategies for educators to strengthen community health nursing education.
