Grandmother Irene, a co-founder of Minwaashin lodge celebrating 31 years of work there. She is an inter-generational survivor of the residential school system. her work at the lodge supports women survivors of lethal violence, assisting them with safety plans, stabilization, healing, and employment & education achievement.

Grandmother Irene is the keeper of the stories at Minwaashin’s sacred lodge which connects indigenous women to their culture, identity, and ways of being and empowerment.

Bemi Lawal is an accomplished registered nurse with over a decade of clinical nursing experience spanning diverse healthcare settings. She holds a Bachelor of Nursing degree from Athabasca University, after which she pursued further academic excellence, obtaining a Master of Nursing degree in Nursing/Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix. Her commitment to technology and innovation led her to pursue a post-graduate program in Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning at the University of Texas at Austin.

Bemi is an Assistant Professor (Teaching) at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Calgary, where she channels her passion for technology to enhance patient care and nursing education. Her academic pursuits and professional interests focus on utilizing cutting-edge technologies to revolutionize healthcare education and practices, including harnessing the power of large language models (LLM) in educational settings, while advocating for diversity in nursing.

With a dynamic blend of academic accomplishment and hands-on clinical experience, Bemi remains dedicated to advancing nursing education and practice through innovation and inclusivity. Her commitment to excellence and her vision for a technologically empowered future in healthcare continue to drive her contributions to the nursing profession.

Dr. Richard Booth, Western University rbooth6@uwo.ca

Richard Booth is an Associate Professor and Research Chair in Digitally-Enabled Healthcare at the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing at Western University and an Adjunct Scientist with the Primary Care & Health Systems Research group at ICES. As a clinician researcher with an active research program exploring psychiatric-mental health nursing and health informatics, he is interested in the convergence of data, technology, and people as related to practice and nursing education. He has a particular interest in the use of emergent technologies in healthcare and their resulting intended and unintended consequences on practice and society at large. To date, he has led numerous data-related projects, including the assessment of digital health innovations for teaching/learning, human-technology interaction research, and the use of data for population health surveillance. He currently supervises numerous graduate students at both the master’s and doctoral levels and has delivered over 80 presentations and keynote addresses to national and international audiences over the last decade.

Dr. Charles Bilodeau, Université de Sherbrooke charles.s.bilodeau@usherbrooke.ca

Dr. Charles Bilodeau holds a PhD in Health Sciences Research with a specialty in Nursing Sciences. He is an associate professor at the School of Nursing, Université de Sherbrooke, where he teaches clinical assessment, nursing research, and critical care. He is also a member of the FUTUR team at the Center for Innovation in Nursing Education and Professional Learning at Université de Montréal, and a part-time intensive care nurse at CIUSSSE-CHUS. His research interests include clinical education in nursing, health sciences pedagogy, and learning assessment, through participatory, qualitative and mixed research methods. In recent years, Dr. Bilodeau has developed a growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI) for nursing education, particularly in how AI technologies can serve as powerful learning tools for nursing students in clinical decision-making and patient care. He currently leads a project aimed at integrating generative AI (GenAI) tools into the learning process of evidence-based practice by graduate nursing students and is developing a GenAI-based training module to support clinical assessment learning in undergraduate nursing programs. His work seeks to ensure that both nurses and advanced practice nurses are prepared to critically evaluate and responsibly integrate AI tools into their professional practice.

Dr. Cheryl Pollard, University of Regina

Dr. Cheryl Pollard, RN, RPN, PhD, ANEF, is an active scholar and researcher committed to the promotion of mental health and well being. Over her 35-year career in nursing, she has served in a wide range of academic and practice environments spanning large and small public and not-for profit organizations in Canada. She currently serves as Dean for the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Regina. The National League of Nursing has recognized Dr. Pollard’s enduring and substantial contributions to nursing education by inducting her as a Fellow into the Academy of Nursing Education. She is widely regarded as a thought leader and scholar in the areas of healthcare education, innovation, and leadership. As a professor, within the Faculty of Nursing, her passion for the scholarship of teaching and learning – specifically the impact of the relationships within the learning environment is bringing attention to the importance of being kind and compassionate to one another.  She also had the honour of joining CASN’s Board of Directors in November 2023.

Jennifer Dunsford is a masters-prepared registered nurse with a longstanding interest in clinical and organizational healthcare ethics and nursing practice. She is currently Director of Clinical Education for the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences College of Nursing at the University of Manitoba, where she has taught professional foundations and nursing practice courses in the Bachelor of Nursing program. Jennifer’s work history includes 8 years as the Director for Ethics Services with the Winnipeg Health Region before moving over to the university in 2020. She is also an interdisciplinary PhD student whose research interests include intrapersonal conflict and ethical decision-making among nurses who experience workplace violence.

Leanne Topola, MacEwan University topolal@macewan.ca

Leanne’s passion in nursing has always been centered on the value of working in collaboration, practicing from a strengths-based approach while recognizing the importance of working ‘with a client’ vs. doing ‘to, for, or at’ them. This passion was developed over years of experience as a community health nurse working with diverse populations in different contexts in Saskatchewan and Alberta. This philosophy has translated to her approaches in academia.

Leanne has been a faculty member in the MacEwan University Bachelor of Science in Nursing program since 2009 having taught clinical, lab, and theory across various years within the program of study. She strives to facilitate learning centered environments and values working with students who are invested in their education and willing to question and challenge what they are learning. Her greatest moments as an educator happen when a student develops a connection to the content or an experience which is key in their personal development and formation of their professional identity.

Leanne’s program of research is focused on the development of a professional identity with key projects that explore leadership and the professional brand of nursing.

Lisa McKendrick-Calder, MacEwen University mckendrickl@macewan.ca

Lisa McKendrick-Calder is a PhD student at the University of Saskatchewan and an Associate Professor at MacEwan University. Lisa is a passionate educator who aims to engage in relational, strengths focused, and inclusive teaching practices. Her research interests are in psychosocial wellness of students and faculty with prior work investigating nursing student anxiety in the learning environment, educator mental health literacy, and mindfulness in simulation. Additionally, she has worked with international partners looking at student and faculty emotions relating to assessment in higher education. Lisa’s ongoing PhD work, supervised by Dr. Anthony de Padua, is a narrative inquiry investigating the lived experience of linguistically diverse undergraduate nursing students in English education programs in Canada to gain a better understanding of their experiences.

Joyce Tsui, RN, BScN, MN, PhD Candidate is a Registered Nurse with over 20 years of experience in the field of nursing. Joyce is currently a nursing faculty member in the Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program at Centennial College. She also has previous experience teaching in various nursing programs, including Practical Nursing, RPN to RN Bridging to University, and Pre-Health programs. As a faculty member, Joyce strives to create a supportive learning environment that fosters critical thinking and promotes an inclusive space to support students to achieve their full potential. Joyce’s clinical background is in the area of gerontological nursing. She has worked primarily in the long-term care sector and in various roles such as a point of care nurse, a unit leader, a behavioural support outreach nurse, and an interprofessional nurse educator.

Joyce holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Nursing degree with a focus on Leadership in Health Policy and Education from Toronto Metropolitan University. She is currently a PhD Candidate at York University. Her doctoral research focuses on academic accommodation and the medicalization of students with mental health challenges in higher education. She employs institutional ethnography as the method of inquiry to engage in her dissertation research project.
