CASN is pleased to announce that that Dr. Martin Charette is one of the recipients of the 2024 Pat Griffin Research Grant
Martin Charette has been an Assistant Professor at Université de Sherbrooke’s School of Nursing since 2020. Passionate about nursing education and teaching methods, he has been involved in implementing the redesign of the baccalaureate program – integrated education pathway since 2022, by supporting his peers.
He obtained his Bachelor of Nursing in 2007 from Université de Montréal. He worked in surgical intensive care, then as a research nurse in heart failure and transplantation. He completed his PhD in 2018, during which he explored the impact of a competency-based baccalaureate program on nurses’ professional practice. During his doctoral studies, he won the Prix d’excellence en enseignement de l’Université de Montréal, doctoral lecturer category, demonstrating his commitment and excellence in teaching in the undergraduate program.
Following his PhD, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at La Trobe University, Australia, under the supervision of Prof. Lisa McKenna. Specifically interested in the first year of practice of newly graduated nurses and their transition into clinical settings, he set up various research projects to evaluate the impact of nursing residency programs in Australia, and their outcomes on competencies, job satisfaction and retention.
His current research program at the Université de Sherbrooke enables him to pursue his work on developing skills and improving support for newly graduated nurses during their transition. This work is carried out in partnership with clinical stakeholders, through a pragmatic approach to implementing a nursing residency program to support the next generation of nurses.
Prof. Charette is a member of Équipe FUTUR, an inter-university and interdisciplinary research team focused on the professionalization of students in health sciences. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and regularly presents the results of his work on the national and international scene.
