Cultural Humility and Cultural Safety Standards for Nursing Education in Canada

Cultural Safety Standards graphic with text, text is also contained in body of pageThe Canadian Indigenous Nurses Association (CINA) and the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) are pleased to announce the release of “Cultural Humility and Cultural Safety Standards for Nursing Education”. These standards are an update to the “Cultural Competence and Cultural Safety in Nursing Education: A Framework for First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nursing” (A.N.A.C., 2009). The standards are accompanied by specific learning outcomes, which set clear expectations for knowledge and behaviour for students completing a baccalaureate nursing education program in Canada.

The development of these standards was guided by an Advisory Committee comprising Indigenous nurse leaders in education, policy, and clinical practice, alongside non-Indigenous collaborators. Their creation was informed by an environmental scan of both peer-reviewed and grey literature, which is summarized in a background section to the standards. Their development was also informed by consultations with nurses in education and other practice roles as well as nursing students. The document was designed by pipikwan pêhtâkwan.
