Palliative and End-of-Life Care Teaching and Learning Resources 2012

PEOLCcoverENStory-based Learning: A Faculty Guide for Nursing Education

  • A palliative and end-of life care (PEOLC) faculty teaching and learning resource that uses a palliative end-of-life story to demonstrate the use of a unique teaching approach: “story-based learning”. The faculty guide explains the six phases of this pedagogical approach:
    • Phase One: Attending to the Story,
    • Phase Two: What is Going On Here?,
    • Phase Three: Recognizing Patterns of Wholeness and Disruption,
    • Phase Four: Nursing Support,
    • Phase Five: Reflection Praxis,
    • and Phase Six: Attending to the Story

  • This T/L resource corresponds with the “Story-based Learning: A Faculty Guide for Nursing Education” resource, and includes a video component that highlights the key phases of the story-based learning model.

Palliative and End-of-Life Care Toolkit

  • This toolkit is a collection of online resources to assist nursing faculty members in integrating palliative and end-of-life care (PEOLC) content in their courses. Resources contained in this toolkit include:
    • Search strategies for databases
    • Journal websites for searching
    • Professional associations and descriptions of their resources
    • Strategies for searching the World Wide Web and current online resources
    • Search strategies for finding textbooks, video clips, and other teaching tools

Palliative and End-of-Life Care Toolkit: PowerPoint

  • This T/L resource aligns with the Palliative and End-of-Life Care Toolkit document. This PowerPoint provides an overview of the organization, objectives, and content within the resource.

Environmental Scan: Palliative and End-Of-Life Care Teaching and Learning Resources

  • This environmental scan was completed in order to gather existing teaching and learning resources for palliative and end-of-life care. Multiple search strategies were used to gather a wide range of resources relevant to the core PEOLC competencies (Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) Task Force on Palliative and End-Of-Life Care, 2009; CASN Palliative and End-Of-Life Care Advisory Committee, 2011). Additionally, course syllabi and teaching and learning tools were sought from nursing schools across Canada in order to understand how palliative and end-of-life care is being taught in the undergraduate curriculum.

Palliative and End-of-Life Care: Entry-to-Practice Competencies and Indicators for Registered Nurses

An advisory committee of the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) on palliative and end-of-life care (PEOLC) developed national, consensus based competencies and indicators to facilitate greater integration of this area of nursing in undergraduate curricula in Canada. The committee selected the conceptualization of palliative and end-of-life care used in the Canadian Strategy on palliative and end-of-life care to guide this work. The competencies and indicators were developed through a multi-step, iterative process of literature syntheses and national stakeholder consultations.
